Adrick Lui’s body of work is a mixture of contradictory stories and methods, stemming from his unique background as an immigrant-artist as part of the Hong Kong Diaspora, and his education that oscillates between self-taught, atelier, and conceptual methods. Deeply inspired by the motifs and ideas found in Pop Art and the expressive figuration of the 1980s in the European art scene, Adrick Lui uses bold colours, confident drawing and design-first compositions to materialise his childlike sketches and one-off jokes, creating paintings with unique stories that look shallow but feel mysterious. The artist likens his practice to the short story writings of Anton Chekhov, a prolific Russian writer whose greatest medium is the short story and its ability to be both direct and imaginative. Adrick’s commitment to the possibilities of painting and its endless experimentation is reminiscent of his dedicated interest in skillful artists of their time, ranging from Rembrandt to Sigmar Polke, and the list is still growing.

Adrick Lui (b. 2002, Hong Kong) completed a Bachelor of Fine Art with a major in painting at the National Art School in 2024. In 2023, Adrick Lui was involved in a artist-led co-operative named ‘A Business Meeting’ in 2023, a portable gallery with a rotating roster of exhibiting artists. In 2024, Adrick’s painting ‘Marriage Self Portrait’ was acquired by the National Art School and exists alongside the university’s permanent collection since its foundation in 1843. In 2025, he was awarded the Centrehouse Award at the Lloyd Rees emerging art prize. As an emerging artist, Adrick has participated in artists-run group shows and worked with galleries such as Chauffeur Gallery and Gallery 144. Adrick’s works belong in private collections both in Sydney and internationally in his hometown in Hong Kong. Additionally, Adrick has had writings published in the NAS student magazine publication ‘Gaol’ and is mentioned for his participation in the artist-run initiative and art critiques.
